RIPON, Wis. – Ripon's longest winning streak of the season came to an end Wednesday night, due to a 65-40 loss to Carroll College, snapping the Red Hawk's string of three consecutive victories. The Pioneers, who recently had a nine-game win streak snapped, started another one, thanks in part to forcing 28 Ripon turnovers, which led to 31 points, while only committing 19 turnovers of their own. Carroll took the lead mid-way through the first half, and never looked back, leading for the remainder of the game.
Ripon (7-15, 4-11) had hope early, getting off to a quick 4-0 lead on back-to-back baskets by Emily Meyer and Jessica DeHamer. After Carroll (18-4, 12-3) took their first lead of the game, four minutes into the contest, Ripon took it right back on a Jeni Yaeger basket. The Red Hawks scored six consecutive points to take a 12-7 lead with 12 and a half minutes remaining in the half, which was when Carroll would turn up their intensity. After falling behind by five, Carroll used an 18-3 run over the next nine and a half minutes to take a commanding 15-point lead.
The Pioneers continued their strong play in the second half, outscoring Ripon 25-5 in the first 12 and a half minutes of the period to take a 33-point lead, their largest of the game. The Red Hawks shot just 23 percent (7-30) in the second half, including 14 percent (1-7) from 3-point range. Carroll didn't exactly light up the nets in the second period either, making 35 percent (8-23) of their shots from the floor. They were able to sink their free throws however, sealing the game by making 85 percent (17-20) of their foul shots in the period.
Ripon was led by DeHamer and Meyer, with each player scoring 10 points. Meyer also added seven rebounds and three assists. Tiffany Goebel added seven points and four boards.
The Pioneers also had two players score in double figures, with Kim Wickert leading the way with 19, to go along with 10 rebounds. Reigning MWC Player of the Year Crystal Hoewisch poured in 17 points, while also tallying four rebounds and four steals.
Ripon will close out the 2007-08 season on Saturday, when they'll travel to Beloit College. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. and will be followed by the men's contest against the Buccaneers. Both games can be seen live on www.midwestconference.tv.
