SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas - One day after advancing to the championship game of the South Padre Island Shootout in convincing fashion, Ripon was on the other end of a blowout, as they fell 59-38 to Ohio Wesleyan. Ohio Wesleyan shot 52 percent in the first half to take a 10 point halftime lead, which they wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
Ripon's largest lead of the game came at the 17 minute mark of the first half, as Tiffany Goebel gave the Red Hawks a 4-2 advantage. Ripon (3-7) was able to tie the game on a couple separate occasions, but each time they got close, Ohio Wesleyan (7-3) would have an answer. After a Jeni Yaeger layup tied the game at eight, Ohio Wesleyan used a 19-5 run to take a commanding 14 point lead. Ripon was able to cut that lead to 10 at the half, thanks to two Jessica DeHamer baskets in the waning minutes.
Ohio Wesleyan kept their lead in double digits for the first 13 minutes of the second half, until two free throws by Christina Schneider cut that lead to eight, giving the Red Hawks some life. That life wouldn't last however, as Ohio Wesleyan ended the game on a 20-7 run for a 21 point victory. Ripon wasn't helped by their 26 percent (5-19) second half shooting. Ohio Wesleyan also didn't give them much help, as they shot 93 percent (13-14) from the free throw line. Ohio Wesleyan also turned the ball over just 16 times, while Ripon committed 21 miscues.
The Red Hawks didn't have a single player score in double figures, as Yaeger led the team with eight points. DeHamer and Tiffany Goebel chipped in with six points and seven rebounds apiece. Schneider scored five points in 10 minutes of play off the bench. Yaeger and DeHamer were each named to the All-Tournament Team.
Ohio Wesleyan's Laurel Lawson led all scorers with 15, while Kayla Gordon was second on the team with 10 points, to go along with six rebounds. Kelli Lester scored seven points off the bench, making all three of her field goal attempts.
Ripon will now return home, as they'll resume conference play on January 12th at Lawrence University. That game will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Appleton, Wis. and will be followed by the men's contest against the Vikings. Both games can be seen via webcast on www.midwestconference.tv.
