Monmouth Fights Off Red Hawks

January 19, 2008

Box Score

RIPON, Wis. - Ripon dropped their second consecutive game Saturday, losing 60-46 to conference foe Monmouth College, which saw just four players break into the scoring column for them. Monmouth led from the opening basket and never relinquished their lead, as they shot 64 percent (16-25) from the field in the first half to take control of the game.

Despite trailing the whole game, Ripon (4-9, 1-5) was able to keep the game within reach for much of the contest. The Fighting Scots (8-7, 4-4) looked as if they would run away with the game, after going up by seven points just four minutes in. Ripon then battled back to cut the lead to three on a pair of free throws by Jeni Yaeger and an Amanda Lindauer jumper. After trading baskets with each other, Emily Meyer got Ripon to within three once again on a jumper of her own with eight and a half minutes left before halftime. That would be as close as they would get the rest of the way, as Monmouth closed out the half on a 10-3 run.

The Red Hawks managed to cut their deficit to single digits in the second period, pulling to within eight on a basket by Jessica DeHamer. After Ashley Yeast gave Monmouth a 13 point lead with just under nine minutes left, the two teams played evenly for the remainder of the contest. They combined to score nine points in the final eight minutes of play, with each team scoring 21 points in the half. Monmouth made just 30 percent (7-23) of their second half shots after their hot start, while Ripon sank 35 percent (10-29) of their shots in the final period.

Ashley Meister led the charge for the Red Hawks, scoring a career-high 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting, to go along with five rebounds and three steals. Carissa Zuercher added eight points off the bench on 3-of-5 shooting. Emily Meyer also chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds, including four offensive.

Monmouth was led by Yeast's 25 points to lead all scorers, while also pulling down a game-high 11 boards. Elise finished with 19 points, with 13 of them coming in the first half. Melissa Gorski and Katie Sheets were the only other two Monmouth players to break into the scoring column, netting nine and seven points, respectively. Gorski also finished with seven assists and three steals.

Ripon will look to snap their losing streak at Grinnell on January 25th. That game will begin at 5:00 p.m. and will be followed by the men's contest. Both games can be seen live on www.midwestconference.tv.
