Second Half Struggles Seal Ripon's Fate

November 17, 2007

Box Score

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Red Hawks was able to hang with Lakeland College for a half at Saturday's Lakeland College Tournament Championship game, but their second half shooting woes helped give Lakeland the victory,

51-31. The Red Hawks went into halftime trailing by just four points, but shot 18 percent (5-28) from the field in the second period, as they suffered their first loss of the season.

The Red Hawks (1-1) controlled the game early, never trailing for the first 18 minutes, and getting out to a five point lead at one point. The scoring was distributed evenly early on, as seven different players accounted for the team's first eight baskets. Lakeland (2-0) took their first lead of the game with one and a half minutes left in the first half on a pair of Terra Hiben free throws and wouldn't look back, leading for the rest of the game. Hiben had 13 points and seven rebounds in the first half alone for the Muskies.

The second half was all Lakeland, as they controlled the half from the outset, going on a 12-2 run to start the second period, building a 14 point lead. They would lead by as many as 22, thanks in part to Ripon's struggles to get the ball through the basket. The Red Hawks turned the ball over 30 times in the game, which the Muskies converted into 15 points.

Ripon was led by Jeni Yaeger for the second consecutive game, as she scored a team-high six points, while also pulling down a team-best 10 rebounds. Jessica DeHamer added five points and nine boards, while Carissa Zuercher added four points and three rebounds. Freshman Emily Meyer helped lead the bench, recording three points and four rebounds.

Hiben finished the game with 15 points after her monster first half for the Muskies, while also pulling down a

team-high eight rebounds. Peggy Keiper was the only other player in double figures, scoring 11 to go along with four rebounds. Brenda Paulson chipped in with seven points and six rebounds in the winning effort.

The Red Hawks will hope to get back on the winning track on Tuesday, as they'll play their home opener against UW-Oshkosh. Ripon won last year's meeting against the Titans by three points and hope for a repeat of that feat this season. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Storzer Center.
