Lake Forest Defeats Red Hawks For Series Sweep

January 26, 2008

Box Score

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Ripon did their best to hang with Lake Forest Saturday afternoon as they tried to avenge a loss to the Foresters just a week ago. The Red Hawks held the lead midway through the first half, but Lake Forest proved to be too much, going on to win 75-60, thanks, in part to 35 points from their bench.

Ripon’s largest lead of the game came with under 13 minutes left in the first half, as Katie Horkan hit a jumper to give the Red Hawks a 13-10 lead. After that shot, Lake Forest (12-3, 6-2) turned up their game, going on a 26-5 run to end the half and take an 18 point halftime lead. In that run, Ripon (4-11, 1-7) missed eight consecutive shots, before hitting two of their final three of the period. They also turned the ball over 11 times in the final 11 minutes of the half. Lake Forest shot 42 percent from the field in the period, while the Red Hawks made 30 percent of their shots.

Lake Forest continued to pour it on in the second half, making their first four shots to open a 29-point lead, which was their largest of the day. After Ripon cut that lead to less than 20 points, the Foresters managed to build a 21 point lead with just over four minutes remaining. Ripon managed to put together a run late in the game, pulling to within 14 points, but time ran out on them.

Freshman Emily Meyer led the Red Hawks with game-highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds, including sinking all three of her 3-pointers. Horkan also managed to hit double figures, with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting, to go along with six rebounds.

Kate Grunauer led the Foresters with 14 points, including a 4-for-4 performance from 3-point range. Claire Schmidt and Nicole Baich added 13 and 11 points, respectively, while Lisa Nassin recorded 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Ripon will now head to Carroll College on Wednesday to face the third-place Pioneers. That game will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the men’s contest. Both games can be seen on www.midwestconference.tv.
