GRINNELL, Iowa - Ripon's women's basketball team had a shot at winning Friday's game up until the final horn against Grinnell in a game that saw the lead change hands 19 times. The final lead change came with three seconds remaining, as Grinnell's Hannah Wolf drilled a 3-point shot to give the Pioneers a 60-57 victory. The game was also tied on 12 separate occasions.
Things looked easy for the Red Hawks (4-10, 1-6) early on, as they scored the first four points of the game on baskets by Ashley Meister and Jeni Yaeger. Ripon would hold that lead for the first six minutes of the game, before Jessica Shotts hit a 3-pointer for the Pioneers (4-10, 2-5). After the lead shifted hands several times, Ripon took the largest lead of the first half, going up by five points on baskets by Jana Van Handel and Tiffany Goebel. Grinnell scored the next seven points to take a 24-22 lead, but Goebel grabbed the lead right back, hitting a 3-pointer. Amanda Lindauer then gave the Red Hawks a four point advantage, which was cut in half just before halftime on a pair of Pioneer free throws.
Both teams came out firing in the second half, combining to make five of the first seven shots of the second half. After Grinnell took a 34-32 lead, Ripon would go on a 14-4 run to take an eight point lead, which marked the largest lead of the game for either team. That lead was cut to two points with under four minutes to play. After a Ripon free throw, Grinnell's Briana Gallo tied the game with a 3-pointer. Wolf would then give the Pioneers a 51-50 lead on a layup with under three to play. The two teams would then exchange shots until Carissa Zuercher gave Ripon a two point advantage with 57 seconds left on a shot from long-range. Grinnell didn't panic, tying the game with a layup on the subsequent possession. The Red Hawks had a chance to take the lead, but turned the ball over with 19 seconds left, giving the Pioneers a chance to produce the late-game heroics. That's just what Wolf would do, as she nailed the winning shot with three seconds left.
The Red Hawks were led by Yaeger's 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while Jessica DeHamer also contributed with eight points, five boards, and three assists. Goebel chipped in with seven points on 3-of-6 shooting. The Red Hawks dropped their third consecutive game, despite outrebounding the Pioneers 44-35.
Wolf led all scorers with a game-high 19 points, while also completing a double-double with 10 rebounds. Mallory Scharf scored 13, while Gallo had 10 off the bench. Grinnell scored 12 points off turnovers, while Ripon managed just four points off miscues.
Ripon won't have much time to rest, as they'll travel to Lake Forest on Saturday. That game will begin at 2:00 p.m. and will be followed by the men's contest against the Foresters. Both games can be seen via webcast on www.midwestconference.tv.
