MEQUON, Wis. - Ripon led by just two points at halftime in Saturday’s game at Concordia (WI), but scored 12 consecutive points in the second half to take command of the game, en route to a 53-44 victory over the Falcons. The Red Hawk defense came up huge with 17 steals in the game, while holding Concordia (WI) to 28 percent shooting (9-32) in the second half.
The Red Hawks (2-2) looked like they were in for a fight in a first half that featured six ties and three lead changes. Concordia (1-3) took their largest lead of the game on a lay up by Jenna Ferron with 12 and a half minutes remaining, giving the Falcons a five point advantage. That lead would quickly dwindle down, as Ripon scored 11 of the game’s next 15 points to take a two point lead. After Concordia tied the game again, Christina Schneider gave the Red Hawks the lead for good on a jumper with six and a half minutes left in the half. Ripon took their largest lead of six points on a lay up by Jessica DeHamer with just over one minute left. Concordia scored the final four points of the half, sending the Red Hawks to the locker room up by two.
The second half began about as one-sided as the first half was close. After the two teams exchanged baskets, Ripon scored 12 consecutive points to break the game wide open with a 14-point lead, holding Concordia scoreless for nine minutes. DeHamer led the charge with eight points in that span, while Carissa Zuercher accounted for the other four. Concordia would get as close as seven points the rest of the way, but time would run out on them, as Ripon iced the game with four free throws in the final minute of play.
Leading the way for the Red Hawks was senior Tiffany Goebel, who in her first start of the season, scored a game-high 16 points, while also grabbing six rebounds. DeHamer finished the game with 15 points and five steals, while Jeni Yaeger added 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting, and four rebounds. Ripon finished the game shooting 41 percent (21-51).
Concordia was led by a pair of players scoring in double figures. Megan Sopkowicz led the team with 11 points, while also adding five rebounds. Krista Mayyou scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high six boards. Erin Meier chipped in with eight points and four assists.
The Red Hawks will stay on the road for their next contest, as they'll travel to Wheaton College to face the Thunder, who defeated Ripon last year at Storzer Center. That game is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in Wheaton, Ill.
