Red Hawks Run Out of Steam At Carroll

January 30, 2008

Box Score

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Ripon was able to hang with one of the Midwest Conference's top teams Wednesday night, taking a 25-24 halftime lead. The Red Hawks wouldn't be as successful in the second half however, as Carroll College wore them down, winning 61-48, despite 25 points by Ripon freshman Emily Meyer.

Things couldn't have started much better for the Red Hawks in the first half, as they got out to an 18-9 lead halfway through the period, thanks to 10 points by Meyer in that span, who scored 15 points in the period. Carroll would quickly get back into the game after that point, scoring 11 consecutive points to take a two-point lead with just over four minutes before the half. Staci Dieringer then quickly tied the game at 20 and the lead changed hands a couple times in the next few minutes. Another Meyer basket with 22 seconds left gave Ripon a one-point lead and momentum heading into the locker room.

Jessica DeHamer gave Ripon a three-point lead with a basket on the first possession of the second half to continue that momentum, but that was promptly ended by seven consecutive points by the Pioneers. After Ripon's Christina Schneider cut Carroll's lead to two points, the Pioneers used a 10-2 run to take the first double-digit lead of the contest. Ripon would close the gap to six on a lay-up by Ashley Meister with three minutes remaining, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way, as Carroll scored the final seven points to finish off the victory.

Meyer's career night was highlighted by an 8-for-16 shooting performance from the field, while also making 9-of-10 from the free throw line. She also added five rebounds for the Red Hawks. DeHamer finished the game with five points and three rebounds, while Meister and Jeni Yaeger each scored four points. Yaeger also added a team-high eight rebounds. The Red Hawks shot 33 percent (18-55) from the field in the game.

Carroll was led by reigning MWC Player of the Year Crystal Hoewisch, who finished with 21 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Kim Wickert added 11 points and nine rebounds, while Amy Fleming chipped in with 10 points. Carroll heated up in the second half, shooting 56 percent from the field to pull away, after making 29 percent of their shots in the first half.

Ripon will try to bounce back on Saturday against Beloit College on what will be Ripon's Alumni Day. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. and will be followed by the men's contest. Ripon's women's alumni game will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the men's alumni game starting shortly after that.
