Seniors Lead Red Hawks to Victory over Beloit
February 17, 2007
Box Score

RIPON, Wis. - With J.J Jumper, the NCAA's official mascot, in attendance, the Ripon College women's basketball team ended their season on a high note, defeateing Beloit College 77-56. That marks just their second win in the last nine games.

The Buccaneers (11-12, 7-9) started off hot opening the game with a 5-0 run. But the Red Hawks quickly answered and were soon leading 6-5. Much of the first half was back-and-forth like this as there were seven lead changes and four ties. Thanks in large part to Theresa Kenney's 11 points, Ripon had the advantage at the break, 32-29.

A pair of field goals by Jessica DeHamer started the second half, and a lay up by JoEllen Buerger capped a 6-0 run by the Red Hawks. With 16 minutes left, a basket by Kenney pushed the score to 42-31, and Beloit would never get any closer.

On Senior Day, it would be fitting that Ripon would be led in scoring by two seniors, Kenney and Buerger, who each had 22 points. Buerger added a double-double with 11 rebounds, and Kenney fell one shy with 9 of her own. The Red Hawks owned the Buccaneers inside, outscoring them 50-16 in the paint.

Beloit was led by Katie McCool who finished with 15 points, to go along with six rebounds. Angie Meehan helped out with 14 points, two rebounds, three assists, and two steals, but she also had seven turnovers. The Buccaneers only shot 35 percent from the field compared to Ripon's 48 percent.

The Red Hawks did not qualify for the conference tournament and that means that this was the final game for this year's seniors. Ripon will be graduating five players (Kenney, Buerger, Cassy Gerard, Morgan Roberts, and Sara Gustafson). The senior class has won two conference championships in their tenure, and have three players in the all-time top ten in different categories: Buerger is tied for seventh place with 29 blocks, Gustafson is in sixth place in assists with 224, and Roberts is third place in three-point field goals with 146 and eighth place in assists with 210.
