Ripon Scorches The Nets In Win Over Loras
December 18, 2006
Box Score

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Day Two of the Cruzin Classic brought much better results for the Ripon women's basketball team than they experienced in day one. The Red Hawks used 50 percent shooting Monday afternoon to defeat Loras College (IA) 69-60.

Ripon (5-4) scored as many points in the first half, 32, as they did the entire game on Sunday, but the game didn't start as good as it finished. Loras (4-5) scored the first basket of the game and led for most of the game, leading by as many as nine points. Ripon fought back and climbed back into the game, thanks to the hot shooting by sophomore Mona Delsman. With eight minutes left in the first period, Delsman connected on three consecutive three-pointers, cutting the DuHawk lead to one point. Delsman would finish with 15 points in the first half, hitting on all four of her three-point attempts. Loras was able to build up a small lead again, only to have the Red Hawks cut into that lead again. With two and a half minutes left in the half, Jo Ellen Buerger's jump shot gave Ripon their first lead of the day. Buerger wasn't done, as she hit a three-pointer with 15 seconds left, giving Ripon a three-point halftime lead.

The Red Hawks started the second half like they finished the first, making shots when they needed them most. Ripon never trailed in the second period, as they were able to build a 10 point lead, their largest of the game. Loras wouldn't say die though. The Duhawks cut the lead to a single point with just over four minutes left in the game on a three-pointer by Natalie Pucci. As was the case all night, Mona Delsman had an answer, hitting a jumper on Ripon's next possession. That was followed by a Morgan Roberts three-pointer on Ripon's next trip down the floor. The Red Hawks iced the game at the free throw line, giving them a 1-1 record at the Cruzin Classic.

Delsman finished with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while dishing out a team-high six assists. Ripon received a huge night from their bench, outscoring Loras' bench 36-14. Theresa Kenney scored a season-best 19 points, to go along with six rebounds, and four assists. Buerger chipped in with 13 points and five boards. The Red Hawks finished the game, shooting 43 percent from three-point range, while also making 85 percent of their free throws, including 8-of-9 in the second half.

Loras was led by Pucci, who scored a game-high 23 points. Alecia Miller chipped in with 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting, while Lindsay Bava scored nine off the bench. After shooting 52 percent in the first half, Loras struggled in the second half, shooting just 35 percent.

Ripon will now return home for a pair of games, beginning January 4th against Illinois College, in what is a makeup game for their Dec. 2 game, which was postponed. Gametime is set for 5:00 p.m. at Storzer Center and will be followed by the men's contest.
