UW-Platteville Holds Off Ripon
November 18, 2006
Box Score

RIPON, Wis. - The first twenty minutes of Saturday's game against UW-Platteville was played very evenly, with neither team leading by more than eight points. The Pioneers used a second half surge to take a commanding lead, then hold off a late Ripon run, as the Red Hawks lost their first game of the season, 88-77 in day two action of the Ripon Tip-Off Tournament.

Ripon (1-1) trailed for the majority of the first half, but cut UW-Platteville's lead to one with 58 seconds left in the period on a three-pointer by freshman Amanda Lindauer. On the Red Hawk's ensuing possession, Jo Ellen Buerger gave Ripon their first lead since the 14:43 mark. It was short-lived however, as the Pioneers raced back down the court and converted on a layup of their own with just seconds remaining, as they would take a one point lead into halftime.

Ripon's Sara Gustafson gave the Red Hawks the lead one more time as she hit a jumper on the first possession of the second half. That would be the last time that Ripon would lead the rest of the day however. Megan Guernsey gave UW-Platteville the lead for good on their next trip down the court, as she converted on a 3-pointer. The Pioneers built a 13 point lead with under 10 minutes to play and were threatening to blow the game wide open. The Red Hawks showed no quit though, as another freshman came up big. Ashley Kaminski made three consecutive three-pointers, cutting the deficit to just six points, but that's as close as Ripon would get the rest of the way.

The Red Hawks were led by Lindauer's 13 points, her second straight double-digit contest. Kaminski finished with 12 points, on 4-of-6 shooting from behind the arc. Jeni Yaeger chipped in 10 points, while Mona Delsman contributed nine points and five assists. The Red Hawks showed their vulnerability at times, as they were outrebounded 34-20 by a much bigger UW-Platteville team.

The Pioneers shot 68 percent in the second half, helping them put the game away. Lisa Grantman led the charge with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Lisa Wubben finished with 18 points, while Charity Stotmeister, Brianna Klaas, and Liz Tesch ended up with 16, 15, and 13 points, respectively.

Grantman and Wubben were named to the All-Tournament team, along with Ripon's Delsman. Joining them on the All-Tournament team were Clarke College's Lauren Johnson, and UW-Superior's Katie Moench, who was also named the Tournament MVP.

Ripon will try to get back to their winning ways on Tuesday, November 21, as they'll travel to UW-Oshkosh to do battle with the Titans. Tip off is set for 7:00 in Oshkosh.
