WAUKESHA, Wis. - Already having clinched a spot in next weekend's Midwest Conference Tournament, the Ripon volleyball team had one more opportunity for a tune-up in the regular season, as they squared off with Carroll University on Saturday. The Pioneers took the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-22, before Ripon battled back to take the third, 25-19. That would be all they would get, as Carroll put the game away in the fourth set, winning 25-17.
Ripon's Anna Alvin continued her torrid pace in the kills category, building on her team-leading mark with 11 kills against the Pioneers. Alvin now has 375 kills, which is the seventh-best for a single season in school history. She added one service ace and one block against the Pioneers. Lisa Aguilar also chipped in with seven kills, while Sara Heim led the defense with 11 digs.
Carroll was led by Jessica Fleck's 14 kills and five blocks, while Michele Leonard added 12 kills. Nikole Bohn and Samantha Derynda combined for 37 assists, while Justine Martin led all players with 28 digs. The Pioneers registered 11.5 total team blocks, compared to just two for the Red Hawks.
Despite the loss, Ripon's season will continue next weekend, as they'll have one more shot at regular season champion St. Norbert College, who has defeated Ripon three times this season. They will square off in the first round of the MWC Tournament Friday at 7 p.m. in DePere, Wis. That match can be seen live on www.midwestconference.tv.
