RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawk volleyball team dug themselves a hole to start Friday night's match against Monmouth, losing the first two games. Ripon finally got some momentum by winning the third game, but it was too little, too late, as the Fighting Scots finished them off in the fourth game, winning 30-25, 30-25, 27-30, 30-25.
The Fighting Scots (10-3, 1-0) recorded 60 kills in the match, compared to 43 for the Red Hawks (5-7, 0-1) Monmouth also achieved more digs and assists than Ripon, but the Red Hawks brought their block party as usual, recording nine team blocks, which was two more than the Fighting Scots. Ripon's nine blocks included 16 block assists.
Ripon was led by Anna Alvin, who continued her strong play as of late, with a team-high 12 kills. Christy Looker and Amy Patton added eight and seven kills, respectively. Looker also recorded a team-high 22 digs, while Patton had 15 digs and two service aces. Ashley Schertz and Jessica Chatmon led the Red Hawks with five and four block assists, respectively.
Monmouth had four players in double-digit kills, led by Tanesha Hughes, with 14. Ashley Yeast had 11, while Kendra James and Alyson Schroeter each finished with ten. Colleen Wilkin led Monmouth with 27 assists, while Crystal Myers recorded a game-high 31 digs in the win.
Ripon will try to even their conference record Saturday afternoon when they'll tangle with Illinois College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Storzer Center. The action can be seen live via webcast at www.midwestconference.tv.
