RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon College volleyball team came back in dramatic fashion Thursday to defeat Lake Forest in five games, 30-22, 18-30, 23-30, 33-31, 15-10. After winning the first game, the Red Hawks were outplayed in the second two, and for much of the third, before rallying for 10 of the game's final 14 points. The Red Hawks then got on a roll in the fifth and final set, recording seven consecutive points to edge the Foresters.
Anna Alvin led the way for Ripon (9-7, 4-1), with a team-high 14 kills. Amy Patton and Jeni Yaeger weren't far behind, as they each recorded 12 kills. Patton also had 21 digs and three service aces, while Yaeger was credited with six blocks, including five assisted. Ashley Schertz was also huge at the net, with seven blocks of her own, assisting on six of them. Mary Friend and Alison Ernst combined for 49 assists, while Christy Looker displayed her all-around game with six kills, four service aces, and 23 digs.
Lake Forest (4-14, 0-2) was led by Nicole Baich's 20 kills and seven blocks. Ashley Cretacci and Mandi Mulliner chipped in with 15 and 10 kills, respectively, while Deena Blanchard and Ashleigh Martinez set them up, with a combined 47 assists. Lisa Sturgill recorded 41 digs in the losing effort.
This victory marks Ripon's fourth win in a row, keeping them in third place by their lonesome in the Midwest Conference standings. They'll try to keep their streak alive on Saturday, as they'll travel to Appleton, Wis. to square off with Lawrence University. That game will begin at 11:30 a.m. and can be seen via webcast at www.midwestconference.tv.
