RIPON, Wis. - Day one of the Red Hawk Invitational Tournament didn't turn out the way Ripon had hoped. The Red Hawks got a sneak peak of conference foe St. Norbert, who defeated the Red Hawks in four games in the first match of the tournament. That was followed by a three-game loss to UW-Stevens Point, dropping Ripon's record back to .500 at 4-4.
St. Norbert (10-1) defeated Ripon in the first match by a score of 30-19, 30-27, 31-33, 30-26, in a game that was tightly contested throughout. After a sub-par first game, Ripon stood toe-to-toe with St. Norbert, never giving up and rallying to win the third game. The Red Hawks recorded 58 kills in the match, including 13 by Jeni Yaeger. Jessica Chatmon and Anna Alvin added 12 kills of their own. Alison Ernst and Mary Friend combined for 43 assists, while Sara Heim recorded 40 digs, which is the second most in a single match in Ripon history.
The Red Hawks couldn't keep the second match of the day nearly as close as the first. UW-Stevens Point (7-4) defeated Ripon 30-20, 30-20, 30-25 for the win. Yaeger once again led the Red Hawks in kills, with nine. Heim was able to produce 17 more digs, while Amy Patton got into the action with 12 digs of her own. Ripon's attack percentage was .05, as they recorded just 29 kills in 140 attacks.
Ripon will try to rebound on Saturday in Day Two of the Red Hawk Invitational. The Red Hawks will square off with UW-River Falls at 10:00 a.m., before doing battle with Martin Luther College at 2:00 p.m. All games on Saturday will be held at Storzer Center.
