RIPON, Wis. - A day after losing two games as the host team in the Red Hawk Invitational, Ripon split a pair of matches in the second day of play, finishing 1-3 for the tournament. Ripon lost their first match of the day in three games to UW-River Falls. The Red Hawks then went on to defeat Martin Luther College in an emotional five game victory to up their season record to 5-5.
UW-River Falls (5-9) started out strong in their match with the Red Hawks, eventually winning 30-17, 30-25, 31-29. One bright spot for Ripon was their blocking. The Red Hawks recorded 20 blocks, including six apiece from Jessica Chatmon and Jeni Yaeger. Ashley Kirst and Christy Looker led the defensive charge, recording 17 and 15 digs, respectively.
The Red Hawk's second match of the day turned out to be one of the most competitive matches of the entire tournament. Martin Luther College (0-10) put up a fight, but Ripon came away with the victory 30-14, 30-25, 24-30, 29-31, 15-13. Chatmon led the charge at the net for the Red Hawks, recording a team-high 10 kills. Mary Friend and Alison Ernst combined for 33 assists, while Ernst also led the team with four service aces. The Red Hawks recorded 112 digs as a team, with Sara Heim leading the way with 27.
UW-Stevens Point were named tournament champions by winning all four of their matches over the weekend. Ripon freshman Anna Alvin was named to the All-Tournament team. Joining her were Carroll's Cara Sronce, UW-River Falls' Kelsey Scheele, Martin Luther's Emily Rasmussen, UW-Stevens Point's Shelly Maus, and St. Norbert's Katie Casebolt.
The Red Hawks will resume play on Tuesday at home against Edgewood College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Storzer Center and can be seen live via web cast on www.midwestconference.tv.
