WAUKESHA, Wis. - Ripon's men's and women's track and field teams finished with identical second place finishes at Tuesday's Wisconsin Private College Championships, which was suspended from Saturday due to rain and lightning. The Red Hawks won 11 events on the day, while finishing in the top three in 18 events. The meet also featured 19 season-bests by Ripon student-athletes.
Ripon's men scored 151.5 team points, trailing only Carroll University, who was the host of the meet. Kyle Roy won the shot put for the Red Hawks with a distance of 45-04. Also taking first place were Jason Smith in the 5K (15:18.03), A.J. Thew in the 1500 (4:14.43) and Ben Worcester in the 10K. Ripon's 4x400 relay team of Thew, Andrew Handeland, Ben Rabata and Jamie Reese also placed first with a time of 3:39.31. Handeland and Reese then teamed up with Bob Wood and Muji Thompson to finish second in the 4x100 with a time of 44.21. Wood and Jeff Trinka each placed second in the javelin and hammer throw with distances of 153-11 and 135-11, respectively. Finishing third in their events were Brad Bogenschutz (shot put), Wood (400 IH) and Reese (long jump).
The Red Hawk women also fared well, beating out seven other teams with a team score of 106 to finish in second place. They were led by Trisha Jones and Heidi Baerenwald, whom each recorded two first place finishes. Jones won the triple jump (35-00.50 and 400 IH (1:08.02), while Baerenwald was victorious in the shot put (43-09.25) and disc (123-11.25). Jessica Davey also topped the charts in the 5K, running a season-best time of 18:49.13, while Erin Beggs won the 10K. In addition to her two first place finishes, Jones was also third in the high jump with a height of 4-10.
Ripon will now focus on competing at Saturday's Badger Open in Madison, Wis., which will be the final meet before the Midwest Conference Championships the following weekend.
