WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Ripon men's and women's track and field team went up against the best talent in the Midwest Conference over the weekend, taking part in the 2009 MWC Championships. The Red Hawk men finished sixth at the two-day event, while Ripon's women took fourth out of the nine conference teams.
The Red Hawk men earned 55 team points, which was 43 behind the fifth place team. They were led by Jason Smith's first place finish in the 5K, with a winning time of 15:09.06, which was 11 seconds better than the next-best time. Kyle Roy and Bob Wood also earned a top three finish at the Championships. Roy finished third in the hammer throw with a distance of 148-06, while Wood's 110-Meter Hurdle time of 15.52 was third, .49 seconds behind the winner of the event. Monmouth won the meet with 194 team points.
In the women's competition, Ripon saw two student-athletes win their respective events, en route to 70 team points. Heidi Baerenwald continued her outstanding freshman season, setting a new MWC Championship record in the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark of 45-04.50. That helped her earn the MWC Field Performer of the meet. Baerenwald has finished first in that event in every meet she has competed in this season. Also taking home a first-place finish was senior Trisha Jones, who won the triple jump with a distance of 35-11.25, which was five more inches than the next-best jump. Fellow senior Brittany Dick was the only Red Hawk to earn two top-three finishes, taking second in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase with a NCAA provisional time of 11:10.28 and third in the 1500 Meters with a time of 4:49.95. Monmouth also won the women's competition with 254 points.
