JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Red Hawk's 2008 Indoor Track and Field season was culminated with the MWC Championships on Saturday, in which the men's team improved on last year's finish. Meanwhile, the women finished one spot behind last season's result. The Ripon men earned a fifth place finish this year, while the women's team came in eighth.

The men's team scored 69 team points, which is the most points the men's program has scored at the Indoor Championships. They were fourth after the first day of action, but slipped to fifth on the second day. Day one was highlighted by Jim Hein's second-place finish in the one mile run, with a time of 4:21.22. That was just one second behind the winner of the event. The second day of action was highlighted by the high jump, which saw two Red Hawks finish in the top three. Freshmen Max Bellmore and Alex Tomsheck tied for second, each with a height of
06-05. One other performance of note came in the 400 meters, where freshman Jamie Reese broke his own school record, with a time of 51.52.

The Red Hawk women finished the two-day event with 25 team points, which was 14 points away from the
fifth-place finisher. After ending the first day in ninth place, Ripon climbed up to eighth after the second day of competition. Jenni Marcell was the big story for the Red Hawks, as she finished in the top three in both the weight throw and shot put. In the weight throw, Marcell shattered her own school record by nearly three feet, throwing a distance of 48-03.25. She went on to finish third in the shot put, throwing a distance of 40-08.75.

Ripon will resume their track and field season when they'll open the outdoor season on March 29th. The Red Hawks will host the Sherman-Lukoski Invite at 11:00 a.m. on that day, at Ingalls Field.
