RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's first outdoor track meet of the season couldn't have gone much better at Saturday's Sherman-Lukoski Invitational. The Red Hawk men placed first out of seven teams, while the Ripon women finished third out of five schools. The Red Hawks combined for 14 first-place and seven second-place finishes.
The men's team won the meet with a team score of 248 points, which was nearly double that of the second-place team, Michigan Tech. Ripon's Bakary Dao and Jamie Reese were victorious in the 100 and 400 meters, respectively, while Jim Hein and Ben Worcester won their respective events, the 800 meters and 10K. Fellow Red Hawk Cody Jolin finished just behind Worcester, with a second place finish in the 10K. Dao and Reese were also a part of Ripon's winning 4x100 relay team, along with Abdoul Madjid and Andrew Handeland, which ran the event in 43.63 seconds. Madjid added a second-place finish in the long jump as well. Bob Wood and Andrew Peck also claimed first-place finishes on the day. Wood ran the 110 meter hurdles in 16.60 seconds, while Peck ran the 3K Steeplechase in 10:12.89. Max Bellmore and Kyle Roy each gave the Red Hawks a first-place finish in a field event. Bellmore won the triple jump with a distance of 40-00.25, while Roy won the Discus with a distance of 126-01. Alex Tomsheck also placed in the triple jump, finishing second with a jump of 39-04.5. Jason Smith had a second-place finish as well, with a 5K time of 15:54.44.
The women's field events were dominated by Ripon's Jenni Marcell, who competed in four events, winning them all. Marcell placed first in the shot put with a throw of 39-09.5, while also winning the discus with a throw of 123-04.25. She also won the Hammer and Javelin throws, with distances of 132-11.25 and 107-07.75, respectively. Amy Krueger gave the Red Hawks another first place finish in the triple jump, with a distance of 23-07. Erin Beggs, Sparkle Lee, and Caitlin Butterbaugh each earned a second-place finish in their respective events, Beggs in the 10K, Lee in the Long Jump, and Butterbaugh in the Discus. The Red Hawks finished the meet with 143 team points, which was just 24 behind the winner of the meet.
Ripon will hope to continue their excellent start to the outdoor season next weekend when they'll travel to Oshkosh, Wis. to take part in the UW-Oshkosh Invitational on Saturday. That event will begin at 10:00 a.m.
