OSHKOSH, Wis. - The Ripon men's and women's swim teams experienced similar results at this weekend's UW-Oshkosh Invitational, each taking home a third-place finish. The women's team competed against three other teams, finishing ahead of fellow MWC squad St. Norbert College. The men's team battled two other teams during the weekend, UW-Oshkosh and Lawrence University.
The Red Hawk women finished the meet with 589 team points, which was 379 more than the Green Knights. Ripon's Amy Jones was the only member of the Red Hawks to finish first in an event, winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.96. Jenni Schalla also had a good showing, finishing second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:38.85. That time was just .38 seconds behind the winner of the event. Ripon's 800 yard freestyle relay team of Schalla, Shannon Colburn, Aimee Kaczmarek and Katie Corbett took home third place with a time of 9:14.87.
UW-Oshkosh won the meet with a score of 1,209.
Ripon's men's team compiled 694 team points. Their best individual performance came in the 500 freestyle, which saw Parker Heaps win the event with a time of 5:16.27, edging the next-best swimmer by .16 seconds. Heaps also finished third in the 200 freestyle, three seconds behind the winner of the event. The 200 butterfly saw three Red Hawks finish among the top four swimmers. Grant Erickson took second, missing first-place by .10 seconds. He was followed by B.T. Taylor and Matt Stensberg in third and fourth place, respectively. Heaps and Taylor also teamed up with Lucas Ebert and Bill Rodgers to place first in the 400 freestyle relay, with a time of 3:34.11. UW-Oshkosh also won the men's meet, scoring 976 points, which was nine points better than Lawrence.
The Red Hawks will take part in the annual Alumni Meet Friday at 6 p.m. Their next intercollegiate meet will take place on January 10, when they'll take part in the Carroll University Invitational.
