RIPON, Wis. - In their only hosted meet of the year, the Red Hawks treated their home crowd to an outstanding performance, with the women defeating both teams in Friday's double dual and the men's team matching that with a victory of their own. The women earned a 64-30 victory over Beloit College, while also disposing of St. Norbert 66-25. The Red Hawk men refused to be outdone, defeating Beloit 53-39.
The Ripon women had six swimmers win at least one event, with Jeni Schalla leading the way with the only multiple victory night for the Red Hawks. Schalla won the 400 IM and 200 breaststroke with times of 5:15.24 and 2:40.57, respectively. Shannon Colburn finished first in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 21:02.30, while fellow Red Hawk Nikki Franz finished second in that event. Megan Rice and Jessica Powell also experienced some success with victories in the 50 freestyle and 200 butterfly, respectively. The 100 freestyle saw Amy Jones capture first place with a time of 1:01.36, while Katie Corbett also won an event with a time of 2:24.20 in the 200 backstroke. Ripon was also victorious in a pair of relays, winning both the 400 medley and 400 freestyle.
The men's team also saw plenty of swimmers place first, as three swimmers finished at the top of at least one event. Parker Heaps was the only Ripon men's swimmer to win a pair of events, taking first-place in the 1650 freestyle and 400 IM. His 1650 freestyle time of 18:50.02 was nearly three minutes better than the second-place swimmer. Also with wins in their events for the Red Hawks were Zach Smith and Lucas Ebert in the 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke, respectively. The Red Hawk relay team of Smith, Ebert, Grant Erickson and Austin McNeal also took first in the 400 medley, with Ripon's team of Bruce Kukoski, Mike Shelafoe, Matt Stensberg and Severin Larsen was second in that event.
The Red Hawks will hope to build on their early-season success next week, when they'll travel to Waukesha, Wis. to take part at the Carroll University double dual. That meet will begin Friday at 6 p.m.
