APPLETON, Wis. - The Red Hawks swam in style over the weekend as they closed out their season at the Midwest Conference Championships. The men finished sixth in the final standings, setting one individual record in the process, while the women finished in a program-best third place, setting one relay and one individual record during the meet.
The men's team earned 411 team points, putting them ahead of Beloit, Knox, and Illinois College. Ryan Hendricks earned two third-place finishes for the Red Hawks. Hendricks swam a third-best time of 2:13.29 in the 200-yard breaststroke, while also capturing a third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.76, which was just one second off the pace of the winner of the event.
Parker Heaps was once again one of the leaders for the Red Hawks, earning a top-three finish in three events. His best finish was in the 1650 freestyle, where Heaps placed second with a time of 17:07.10. He also finished third in both the 200 yard and 500 yard freestyles with times of 1:48.31 and 4:52.34, respectively. Possibly Heaps' most impressive feat came in Ripon's 200 yard freestyle relay, in which Ripon finished seventh. Swimming the first leg of that relay, Heaps swam a time of 22.33, which breaks the oldest mark in the Ripon record book. That time gives Heaps his fourth school record, breaking the 37-year old record in the 50-yard freestyle by .07 seconds.
The Red Hawk women also had a record-setting day, beginning with their best finish in school history, earning 442 team points for third-place in the meet. They were led by Jenni Schalla's two top three finishes. Schalla also broke the school record in the 400-yard IM with a time of 5:00.47, which was good enough for fifth in the event. Her highest finish of the meet was in the 200-yard breaststroke, where she swam a second-best time of 2:35.25. Schalla also finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:13.52. Finishing just in front of her, in second place, was fellow Red Hawk Amy Jones. Jones swam a time of 1:11.41, which was less than one second off the time of the winner of the event. Katie Corbett also had a second-place finish, swimming a time of 2:18.86 in the 200-yard backstroke.
The women's team earned many of their team points via relays, finishing in the top four in three different relays. They were able to set yet another school record in the 200-yard medley relay, with a time of 1:59.09, placing them second in that event. They also finished third in the 400-yard medley with a time of 4:25.95, and fourth in the
200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.31.
