Men and Women Open Season With Respectable Finishes

APPLETON, Wis. - The Ripon men's and women's swim teams kicked off their seasons Saturday at the St. Norbert Sprint Meet, which was held in Appleton, Wis. The men's team came away with a fifth place finish, out of seven teams, while the women's team finished fourth out of eight schools.

The men's team scored 233.5 points as a team, finishing just behind Beloit College, who scored 2.5 points more than the Red Hawks. Ripon finished 14.5 points ahead of fellow Midwest Conference school Carroll College. The Red Hawks were led by C.J. Wagner, who won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 51.49. Ryan Hendricks was the only other Ripon swimmer to finish in the top three of an event, as he tied for third in the 50 yard breaststroke.

The Red Hawk women finished the meet with 218 total points, narrowly edging out Loyola University. Ripon was led by Amy Jones, who finished sixth in the 50 yard breaststroke and seventh in the 50 yard butterfly. Freshman Megan Rice also had a top seven finish, ending in sixth place in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 27.30. Ripon's relay team of Jones, Erin Oakley, Jenni Schalla, and Jessica Powell recorded a fourth place finish in the 100 yard medley, finishing three seconds out of third place.

The Red Hawks will try to keep improving as the season rolls on. They will take travel to Carroll College next Saturday for a meet against the Pioneers.
