GRINNELL, Iowa - The men's and women's swim teams had similar finishes over the weekend, as they each finished seventh at the Midwest Conference Championships at Grinnell College. The host Pioneers won both the men's and women's competitions. Monmouth and Lake Forest finished second and third in the men's competition, while Lawrence and Carroll earned those spots on the women's side.
The Red Hawk men slipped a little from day-to-day in the three day competition. Ripon started the tournament with a fifth place finish after one day of action. They then slipped to sixth after the second day, and fell one more spot to seventh on the final day of the meet. One bright spot for the men's team was during the 100-Yard Breaststroke, which saw Ryan Hendricks finish second with a time of 1:01.01. That was just two seconds off the pace of the winner. Ripon finished with 332 total team points, which was 21 points behind second place Beloit College.
The women's team finished with 354.5 total points, which was 25.5 points behind Beloit. The Red Hawks finished ahead of both St. Norbert and Knox. Ripon was consistent throughout the weekend, as they ended each day in seventh place.
Grinnell's Garnet Smith was named MWC men's diver of the year, while Lake Forest's Maggie Rezac garnered the same award on the women's side. Grinnell earned both the men's and women's swimmer of the year awards as well, as Nate Wittnam and Valerie Stimac received the honors.
