CLEREMONT, Fla. - The Red Hawks dropped a pair of nail biters Wednesday in a doubleheader against The College of New Jersey. They lost the first game 3-1, before losing the second game 3-2, in a game that was decided in the final inning. That is Ripon's third loss to The College of New Jersey in as many days.
TCNJ (5-3) got on the board first in game one, capitalizing on two Red Hawk errors, which allowed the Lions to drive in a run with a single. Ripon (4-4) matched that run the following inning, as Jessica Goudreau crossed the plate on a fielding miscue by TCNJ.
The early inning scoring continued in the bottom of the third, as TCNJ took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the inning. The rally was started with a double to left field by Ellen Seavers. She then advanced to third on a passed ball, and came home on a ground out. Danielle Hagel helped add an insurance run with an RBI bunt single to cap the scoring.
Ripon managed just two hits in the game, coming off the bats of Goudreau and Krista Shafer. Andrea Knorr pitched her fourth complete game of the season for the Red Hawks, allowing two earned runs on three hits in six innings.
Things started similar in the second game, with TCNJ striking first once again. The Lions scored two runs in the top of the second inning, thanks to a pair of RBI singles. Ripon would cut into that lead late in the game, loading the bases with two outs. That set up a bases on balls with two outs, scoring Geenen from third to cut the Lion's lead in half.
Ripon was down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh, but Geenen was able to come through in the clutch, tying the game on an RBI single, which scored Megan Sockness. That tie would be short lived however, as Hagel gave TCNJ the lead on a sac fly in the top of the eighth. The Red Hawks were able to get runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't get a run in, ending the game.
Jackie Reichhart led Ripon with two hits in the second game, including a double. Geenen, Shafer, and Sockness also added base knocks for the Red Hawks. Brittnee Peotter (2-1) took the loss, despite pitching all eight innings. All three of TCNJ's runs were unearned.
The Red Hawks will have a day off on Thursday, before playing the final game of their spring trip on Friday. That game will begin at 9:30 a.m. EDT against Westfield State (MA).
