ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Ripon managed to knock out some hits in their two games at Saturday's Augustana Invitational, but they couldn't come up with the big hit when they needed it, stranding 17 runners on base in their two games combined. The Red Hawks lost the first contest 6-2 to Augustana (IL), before dropping the second game 6-0 to Millikin (IL).
In the first game of the day, Augustana got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first, in a rally that was started by the lead-off batter reaching base on an error. That runner would later score on a 2 RBI single with two outs. The Red Hawks had a quick answer for that, scoring twice in the bottom of the inning. Natalie Geenen led things off with a double and would later score on a Krista Shafer single. Megan Sockness would tie the game a few batters later when she drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
Augustana took the lead back in the fourth inning, which once again began with a Ripon error. That runner would eventually cross the plate on a single. The Vikings added two more runs one inning later on a double to center field and scored another insurance run in the top of the seventh. The Red Hawks loaded the bases with two-out in the bottom of the seventh, but lined out to end the game.
Six different Red Hawks recorded a hit in the game, with Geenen's double being the only extra-base hit. Andrea Knorr pitched all seven innings for the Red Hawks, allowing eight hits and three earned runs, while striking out six and walking two.
Hits were even harder to come by in the day's second game, which saw Ripon and Millikin combine for seven hits in the contest. Millikin managed just three of those seven, but due to two Red Hawk errors, the Big Blue won the game 6-0.
Millikin struck first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The first batter walked to lead off the inning and would later score on a double to center field. That was immediately followed by a two-run home run to center, putting the Big Blue in control of the game.
Millikin added another run in the bottom of the second, scoring on a wild pitch, and two more runs in the third, thanks to a pair of Red Hawk errors. Both runs in the inning crossed the plate due to a miscue in the field.
The Red Hawks had four different players record a hit in the game with a Shafer double being the only extra-base hit. Brittnee Peotter took the loss, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on two hits, while walking six and striking out one.
Ripon will hope for better results on Sunday, in day two of the Invitational. They will face Millikin again at 1:00 p.m., before ending the day against Augustana at 3:00 p.m.
