RIPON, Wis. - After winning their first seven games to start the season, Ripon College is now in the midst of a four-game losing streak. The Red Hawks lost both games of their doubleheader against UW-Stevens Point on Thursday, dropping the first game 5-0 and the second 8-0.
The Red Hawks (7-4) gave up only five hits in the first game, but three costly errors were the difference in the game. UW-Stevens Point (13-3) got on the board with three runs in the third inning. That rally was started by a leadoff walk. That runner would eventually score on a 2 RBI double with two out. The next batter also doubled, giving UW-Stevens Point a 3-0 lead.
The Pointers put up a couple insurance runs in the fifth inning. The inning was led off by a single to center. That runner would score one batter later, as the Red Hawks committed two errors on the same play. UW-Stevens Point added one more run for good measure and relied on their pitching, which allowed three hits all game, to take game one.
Ripon had an even tougher time in game two, only recording one hit, a single by Bethany Mehlberg in the second inning. UW-Stevens Point jumped on Ripon early and often, scoring two runs in the first inning, and adding three more in the second. The Pointers second inning runs were produced by a couple RBI singles, with an RBI triple in between.
That would be more than UW-Stevens Point would need, as they scored three more runs to dispose of the Red Hawks in six innings. Two Pointers recorded three hit days, while the team also stole three bases. UW-Stevens Point's Krause got the win with six strong innings. Ripon's Andrea Knorr took the loss, dropping her record to 3-2.
The Red Hawks will try to get back on the winning track this weekend, as they'll travel to UW-Stout to to battle with the Blue Devils. Game one of the double-dip will begin at 1:00 p.m.
