ORLANDO, Fla. - The Red Hawks kicked off the 2007 season just the way they had hoped, with a pair of wins in a sweep of Goldey Beacom at Disney Wide World of Sports. Ripon won the first game 6-0, before eeking out a 2-1 victory in the second game.
In game one, Ripon got on the board early, and often. The Red Hawks scored a run in the top of the first on an RBI double by Jen Mueller that scored Krista Shafer. The two teams then displayed their pitching and defense for the next few innings, before Ripon broke the game wide open with a four spot in thye fifth inning. After the first two batters got out, the next seven batters reached base. Mueller recorded another RBI, as she singled in a run.
Mueller was just as unstoppable on the mound, where she didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. She allowed five hits through seven innings, while striking out three. Mueller also finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored, to lead the way for the Red Hawks. Two freshmen, Jackie Reichhart and Bethany Mehlberg, also knocked in one run apiece.
Game two was a much tighter contest, as the Red Hawks won in dramatic fashion, scoring on a walk-off double by Mehlberg. The two teams each scored one run in the first inning, before the game turned into a pitcher's duel.
Ripon's Andrea Knorr pitched a complete game one-hitter, as she recorded her first win of the season. Goldey Beacom gave up seven hits combined, but none bigger than Mehlberg's to end the game. Her game-winner to centerfield scored Tara Rabideaux for Ripon's second win in as many games. Mehlberg also had the RBI in the first inning to tie the game at one.
