MEQUON, Wis. - Ripon tasted victory for the first time in the 2007 season Saturday, as they defeated Elmhurst College (IL) 6-3. The Red Hawks, who opened the season with four straight losses, split the six singles matches, before sweeping all three doubles contests.
The way things started, it looked like Ripon may not win a match, losing number one, two, and three singles. That's all Elmhurst could muster though, as Ripon won the next three singles matches. Dan Wieler and Andy Schaller each won in two sets, with Schaller winning 6-0, 6-0. Ripon's Dan Rodriguez tied the match at three with a 3-6, 6-0, 10-4 victory over Ryan Applegate.
In doubles play, it was all Red Hawks, all the time. Dave Czarnecki and George Higgis started things off right, winning number one doubles 8-4. That was followed by Schaller and Ben Metzler combining for an 8-5 victory in number two doubles. Weiler and Rodriguez rounded out the day by winning their doubles match 8-3.
The Red Hawks will now have nearly a month off before their next match. They will return to action on March 24, when they'll open conference play against Carroll College. That match will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Fond du Lac Raquet Club.
