RIPON, Wis. - Ripon entered this weekend's play searching for yet another Midwest Conference Tournament berth. Things started out well on Friday, with a 9-0 win over Beloit, but didn't quite end the way they'd hoped, losing 6-3 at St. Norbert. That means that the Red Hawks will miss the MWC Tournament for the first time this decade.
Against Beloit (0-8, 0-4 MWC), the Red Hawks won with ease, winning in two sets in all but one of their singles matches. Dan Weiler and Ben Sweeney were most dominant, winning their respective matches 6-0, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-0. Ripon was equally impressive in doubles play, winning all three of those matches. Dave Czarnecki teamed up with Sweeney to win 8-1, while Andy Schaller and Weiler won their match 8-3. Dan Rodriguez and Jay Hardacre won their doubles competition by default.
Ripon's chances of an MWC Tournament berth was still looking good heading into Sunday, with St. Norbert (13-12, 4-0) being the only thing standing in their way. At the end of the day however, it was the Green Knights who were standing, defeating Ripon (5-11, 2-2 MWC) for the first time in their school's history.
Czarnecki and Schaller each gave Ripon a point for their singles victories, but St. Norbert would win two of three in doubles play. Ripon's only doubles victory came via Czarnecki and Sweeney, who defeated SNC's Adrian Acosta and Ryan Kerswill, 9-8 (7-0).
