OSHKOSH, Wis. - Ripon entered Friday's match against UW-Oshkosh having lost to the Titans in each of the past two years. That turned out to be the story again this year, as UW-O defeated Ripon 8-1 in the season opening match for both teams.
Ripon's lone team point came in number one doubles play, thanks to Dave Czarnecki, who defeated UW-O's Brandon Lepp 3-6, 6-4 (12-10). The Red Hawks were also competitive in number two and five singles. In the second seeded singles match, Ripon's Andy Schaller took Brian Naidicz to the limit, losing 2-6, 6-3, (6-10). Ben Sweeney also fared well at number five, losing to Todd Fuller 2-6, 3-6.
Doubles play was controlled by the Titans for most of the night. The closest Ripon came to a win was in number one doubles, as Czarnecki and Schaller were defeated by Lepp and Naidicz 8-5. In number two doubles, Fuller and Robbie Price defeated Sweeney and Jay Hardacre 8-3. Ripon also went down in number three doubles, as UW-O's Seth Breunig and James Lewison defeated Dan Rodriguez and Dan Weiler 8-1.
The Red Hawks won't have much time to rest before hitting the court once again. They will travel to UW-Eau Claire on Sunday, February 10 for a match at 8:30 a.m.
