HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Red Hawks traveled to Michigan Tech on Saturday in search of their first win of the sesaon. That win will have to wait, as they lost a pair of matches at Michigan Tech. Their first loss came at the hands of Lake Superior State, losing 7-2. Later in the day, the Red Hawks would fall to Michigan Tech 8-1.
Against Lake Superior, Ripon earned one win each in singles and doubles competition. In doubles play, Dave Czarnecki and Ben Sweeney teamed up to defeat Pawel Wegrzyn and Brandon Clayton 8-4 in number one play. Dan Weiler gave Ripon their lone singles victory, winning number four singles by defeating Robert Nelson 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 7-5. Lake Superior won the other five singles matches in two sets.
The Red Hawks didn't fare much better against the host school, Michigan Tech, losing to the Huskies 8-1. Czarnecki gave Ripon their lone point against MTU, winning number one singles 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 6-4, against Brett Girard. Ben Sweeney also nearly won his match, losing in three sets in number three singles. Czarneki and Jay Hardacre came closest to winning their doubles match, falling 9-7 to Girard and Matt Tronnes.
Ripon will play another pair of matches next weekend at Pleasant Valley, when they'll take on Concordia (WI) and MSOE at 12:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
