Red Hawks Win Conference Opener

March 24, 2007
Box Score

FOND Du LAC, Wis. - Ripon had a one month hiatus between their last match and Saturday's conference opening match against Carroll College, but any thoughts that the Red Hawks may be rusty due to the layoff was put to rest, as they defeated the Pioneers 8-1. Ripon won all six of their singles matches, while winning the first two of three doubles contests.

George Higgins got the Red Hawks off on the right foot, winning his number one doubles match 6-0, 6-2 over John Krewer. Dave Czarnecki and Ben Metzler followed with two set victories over Jace Lachepelle and Andy Prentice, respectively. The closest contested match of the night was the number four singles, which saw Ripon's Dan Weiler defeat Ryan Bly in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, and 13-11. Andy Schaller and Dan Rodriguez completed the sweep in singles play by winning the number five and six matches.

Doubles play started out the same way as the singles competition. Czarnecki and Higgins teamed up to win number one doubles 8-2 over Krewer and Prentice. That was followed by a Metzler/Schaller victory over Lachapelle and Bly. The only blemish on the night for the Red Hawks came in number three doubles play, as Weiler and Rodriguez lost 8-4 to Ward and Adam Knoelke.

The Red Hawks will try to keep up their winning ways next weekend, as they'll travel to UW-Oshkosh for a Saturday afternoon match. The two teams will do battle starting at 3:00 p.m.
