MADISON, Wis. - Ripon's season ended Friday afternoon, just one match before the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The Red Hawks advanced to the Midwest Conference championship match by defeating Monmouth 5-4 in the semi-finals earlier in the day. They squared off with MWC powerhouse Grinnell College in the Finals with an automatic berth to Nationals at stake. After all was said and done, Grinnell won their fourth consecutive conference championship with a 6-0 victory over the Red Hawks.
In the earlier match, Ripon used three singles wins and two doubles victories to defeat the Fighting Scots. Dave Czarnecki won number two doubles 6-1, 6-0, while Andy Schaller and Dan Rodriguez were victorious in number five and six singles, respectively. Schaller won a thriller 7-5, 7-6, while Rodriguez won a little easier 7-6, 6-0. In doubles play, Czarnecki teamed up with George Higgins for an 8-5 victory, while Schaller and Ben Metzler sealed the victory with an 8-4 win in number two doubles.
In the finals, Grinnell had no problem with the Red Hawks, winning each match in convincing fashion. The closest Ripon came to winning a match was in number one doubles play, where Higgins and Czarnecki lost 8-4 to Nathaniel Fox and Dan LaFountaine. Grinnell moves on with a 19-7 record, while Ripon's season ends with a 7-8 mark.
