Ripon Edges Knox With Last Minute Goal

October 17, 2009

Box Score

GALESBURG, Ill. - Ripon stayed in the hunt for an MWC Tournament berth thanks to Saturday's 2-1 win in which the Red Hawks escaped by the skin of their teeth. Tied at one with just three minutes remaining, Ripon scored the go-ahead goal to avoid overtime. The win gives the Red Hawks their fourth conference victory of the season, which is the most they've had in one year since winning six in 2005.

Neither team managed a goal in the first half of this tightly contested battle. The Red Hawks (5-9-1, 4-4 MWC) opened the scoring in the 68th minute when Vince Butitta found the net for the fourth time this season. He was assisted by Zach Hershoff and Jayson Krause.

Nine minutes later, the Prairie Fire (3-11, 0-6 MWC) knotted things up at one when Jeff Wozencraft netted his first goal of the season, coming on a penalty kick.

That was answered 10 minutes later when Kyle Seemeyer put the Red Hawks in the lead for good on a header, his fifth goal of the year, thanks to assists from both Justin Gawlik and Kyle Wolff.

Ripon goalkeeper Adam Haefner played the full 90 minutes, saving six shots, while Knox's Max Miller saved eight shots while also playing the entire game. The Red Hawks out-shot the Prairie Fire 15-9.

The Red Hawks will play their conference finale Sunday at Grinnell College. That game will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Grinnell, Iowa and will be preceded by the women's contest against the Pioneers.
