GRINNELL, Iowa - One day after defeating Knox with a goal in the final minutes, Ripon got a dose of its own medicine, falling to Grinnell 3-2 on a last-minute goal. Things appeared to be going well for the Red Hawks, who led 1-0 at halftime and went up by two goals in the second half, but Grinnell scored three times in the final 23 minutes to seal Ripon's fate.
Ripon (5-10-1, 4-5-0 MWC) broke a scoreless tie in the 37th minute when Kyle Seemeyer found Addison Ransom for a his first goal of the season. That would be the score at the half, before Ripon doubled its lead in the 61st minute when Seemeyer scored on assists from Zach Hershoff and Justin Gawlik.
Just when it looked as if Grinnell wouldn't mount any points all afternoon, Andrew Stephenson found the net to cut Ripon's lead in half. Ten minutes later, the score was tied at two, when JP Prouty kicked one in on a penalty kick. The Pioneers (7-6-2, 4-1-2 MWC) weren't done yet, scoring with under two minutes to play on a Matti Sahel unassisted goal, which proved to be the difference.
Ripon goalkeeper Adam Haefner saved six shots on the day, while playing all 90 minutes. Grinnell chose to use a goalie by committee system, as they had three different players between the pipes. Greg Fox made 11 saves in nearly 70 minutes of action, while Ben Schemper and Daryl Brost each saved one shot. Ripon out-shot Grinnell 27-18 during the contest.
The Red Hawks will conclude their 2009 regular season when they head out west this week. They will play two games in Colorado, with the first coming Thursday at Colorado College. That match will begin at 7 p.m.
