October 25, 2008

Box Score

RIPON, Wis. - The 2008 conference champion Carroll Pioneers had their hands full on Saturday with a scrappy Red Hawk team that held their own for much of the day. The teams went into halftime in a scoreless tie, but two second half goals by Carroll's Marc Hietpas propelled the Pioneers to a 2-0 victory.

Ripon goalkeeper Ryan Crane kept the Red Hawks in the game with five saves in the first half. The freshman played all 90 minutes, recording a total of eight saves. Carroll (14-3, 9-0 MWC) shot the ball 17 times, while the Red Hawks (3-13-1, 1-7-1 MWC) managed three shots, including just one in the second half.

The scoreless tie was broken in the 58th minute on Hietpas' 11th goal of the season on an assist from Derek Marie. Ripon's defense was solid the rest of the game until the 88th minute, when Hietpas netted his second goal of the day and his team-leading 12th of the season to put the game out of reach.

Ripon will conclude their 2008 season Tuesday, as they'll take on Milwaukee School of Engineering at 4 p.m.
