MADISON, Wis. - Ripon needed an extra period to get their second consecutive victory Friday night, defeating Edgewood College 3-2 in overtime. The Red Hawks shot the ball 11 times in the game, while Edgewood got off 21 shots. Six of those were saved by Ripon goalkeeper Matt Schultz.
Ripon got on the board first with a Demba Camara goal in the 19th minute, which was assisted by Kris Hanson. Eleven minutes later, the score was tied again, thanks to a goal by Edgewood's Tyler Duellman. The two teams played evenly the rest of the half and went into the break with one goal apiece.
The Eagles took their first lead of the game in the 63rd minute, on a goal from Mike Bourgeois. That was matched four minutes later by Ripon freshman Marco Rhein, his third goal in the last two games. Camara was also a part of the second goal, assisting on the play. With neither team able to find the net the rest of the half, the game headed for overtime.
In the extra period, it looked as if there would be yet another extra period. That is, until Ripon's Ben Baron took a pass from Camara, and knocked the ball into the back of the net with 17 seconds to play for the overtime winner.
That momentum will hopefully carry into Ripon's next game, on Tuesday, when they'll face UW-Platteville at Prairie Field. The game will begin at 2:00 and will be followed by the women's contest against the Pioneers.
