Ripon Earns First Win of the Season

September 2, 2007

Box Score

RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawks used their veterans to build an early lead on Sunday, but used their freshmen to seal the victory, defeating Finlandia University (MI) 6-2. The win gives Ripon their initial victory of the season a month and a half earlier than they got their first victory last year.

The game started out looking like a blowout in the making. Ripon junior Kris Hanson scored two quick goals in the first eight minutes of the match to give the Red Hawks a 2-0 lead. Andrew McKee then followed suit with his first goal of the season at the ten minute mark. Finlandia put up a fight however, as Nick Polzin put one in the back of the net on a free kick to get the Lions on the board. The two teams played even the rest of the half and Ripon went into the break with a 3-1 lead.

Polzin struck again in the second half with his second goal in the 51st minute on a ball that was mishandled by the Ripon goalie. Both teams fought hard the rest of the way, and Ripon finally struck again in the 73rd minute when freshman Kevin Cederholm took a pass from McKee and scored his first goal as a Red Hawk. Fellow freshman Ben Gebauer got into the action six minutes later with a much needed insurance goal, which was assisted by McKee once again. The Red Hawks weren't done yet, scoring four minutes later on a McKee to Sam Gatyas goal, which put the game out of reach. Ripon out shot Finlandia 28-5 in the game, including 17 shots on goal.

The Red Hawks will be in action once again on Tuesday night. They will travel to Milwaukee to face MSOE under the lights at 7:00 p.m.
