Red Hawks Pick Up Big Win Against Monmouth

October 27, 2007

Box Score

RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawks kept their Midwest Conference Tournament hopes very much alive Saturday, as they defeated Monmouth College 5-1. Ripon out shot the Fighting Scots 13 to 10 in the game, including a nine to three advantage in the first half. The only major action in the game came in the first and last 10 minutes of the contest, which is when all six of the game's goals were scored.

Ripon wasted no time getting on the board, scoring just four minutes into the game on an unassisted goal by Jared Brown. Andrew McKee added to that lead three minutes later, thanks to an assist by Chris Quillman. Monmouth then cut the lead in half in the ninth minute, as Chris Anderson found the back of the net. The two teams played evenly for the rest of the half and the Red Hawks took a one goal lead to the half.

The second half was fairly uneventful until the 83rd minute, when McKee scored his second goal of the game. Four minutes later the Red Hawks were on the board again, as Demba Camara found Kevin Cederholm for a score. Ripon finished the scoring one minute later on a goal by Chris Quillman.

The win, combined with Lawrence's loss to Grinnell College puts Ripon and Lawrence in a tie for fifth place, with the top four teams qualifying for the MWC Tournament. Beloit sits in fourth, but Ripon would jump over them if they were to win on Sunday, due to a tiebreaker. If Ripon and Lawrence, who ended in a 2-2 tie earlier this season, were to both win Sunday, the tiebreaker would go to point differential, which Ripon leads by one goal heading into their regular season finale against Illinois College. That game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Prairie Field and will be preceded by the women's contest against the Lady Blues.
