RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon men's soccer team saved all their goals for Thursday afternoon against Finlandia University (MI). After scoring just once in their two games over the weekend, the Red Hawks exploded for a 9-0 victory over the Lions. Ripon got off 32 shots in the game, 25 of them coming in the first half, while Finlandia managed only two shots, with neither coming on goal.
Freshman Marco Rhein kicked off the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 12th minute. Twenty-seven seconds later, the Red Hawks found the back of the net again, this time off the foot of fellow freshman Ben Baron, who took a pass from Kris Hanson. Hanson got his second assist of the game nine minutes later on Rhein's second goal of the day. Baron would match Rhein once again, again less than a minute later, with his second of the day, on an assist from Demba Camara. Ripon scored three more times in the first half, on goals from Chris Quillman, Camara, and Kevin Cederholm, giving them a 7-0 lead at the break.
The Red Hawks let up a little in the second half, but not before Quillman added his second score of the day, off a pass from Justin Gawlik in the 47th minute. Roger Gardea capped the scoring with less than three minutes to play on his first goal of the season.
Ripon will try for their second consecutive win on Friday, when they'll travel to Madison to take on Edgewood College. That game will begin at 8:00 p.m. and will be preceded by the women's match against the Eagles.
