Knox Bests Red Hawks In Double Overtime

October 6, 2007

Box Score

GALESBURG, Ill. - It took four periods to decide a winner in Saturday's game at Knox College, with the Prairie Fire coming away victorious 3-2, scoring the winning goal halfway through the second overtime period. That marks Ripon's fourth overtime game this season, coming away with a tie in the previous three overtime contests.

Ripon (4-4-3, 2-1-1) got on the board first thanks to a Chris Quillman goal in the 27th minute, which was assisted by Kris Hanson. Knox (4-7, 2-3) was able to keep pace with the Red Hawks thanks to an unassisted goal by Jose Leon, just three minutes after the Quillman score. The back-and-forth battle continued in the 38th minute, as Ripon's lone senior Andrew McKee found the back of the net off an assist by Quillman, giving Ripon a 2-1 lead at the half.

Lawrence Povoas knotted up the game once more, scoring Knox's second goal, eight minutes into the second half. From there, the two teams played evenly, with neither team converting on their scoring opportunities, sending the game to overtime.

Each team made two saves in the first overtime period, which ended in the same 2-2 score, forcing a second extra period of play. Knox was finally able to break the tie in the 105th minute on a goal by Jared Jaggers, giving the Prairie Fire the victory. Leon and Jeff Wosencraft were each awarded assists on the final play.

Knox out shot Ripon 28 to 23 in the game. Bob Bradbury made 11 saves for the Red Hawks, while Knox's Cary Archer saved 10 shots in the contest. Each goal keeper played all 105 minutes.

The Red Hawks will hope to get back to their winning ways on Sunday, as they'll travel to Grinnell College to face the Pioneers. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. and will be preceded by the women's contest.
