ST. PAUL, Minn. - Ripon came about as close as a team can come to winning, without tasting victory Friday night at Macalester College to open their 2008 campaign. The Red Hawks tied the game early in the second half, but couldn't get over the hump, losing 2-1. Ripon's defense was outstanding, as they helped the Red Hawks stay in the game, despite just three shots on goal.
Macalester got on the board first, breaking a scoreless tie in the 37th minute on an unassisted Scott Petesch goal from about 20 yards out. That would be the only score at halftime, but Ripon would knot things up at one in the 52nd minute on a goal by Chris Quillman, who found the net on a free kick from about 30 yards away. With both teams refusing to budge, Macalester was able to find the back of the net again in the 69th minute, scoring on a header by Reid Usedom. His goal off a pass from Mike Samuelson gave Macalester the hard-fought victory.
Macalester out-shot Ripon 21-3 in the game, but Ripon goalkeeper Matt Schultz kept the Red Hawks in the game with eight saves on the night. Besides Brouse's goal, Ripon's other shots came from Kevin Cederholm and Kyle Wolff.
Ripon will hope to notch their first victory of the season on Sunday, when they'll play Colorado College in St. Paul. That game will begin at 11:00 a.m.
