RIPON, Wis. - Ripon entered Saturday's game against UW-Platteville
with a very different first half of the season than the Pioneers
have experienced. The Red Hawks came into the contest with an 0-7
record with more than half their losses coming by less than two
goal. UW-Platteville on the other hand entered the game with a
7-0 mark.
The Red Hawks did their best to put the first blemish of the year
on Platteville's record, as they didn't back down in what was a
very physical game with four yellow cards being called. The Pioneers
shot 13 times in the first half, but came up empty each time, including
one that went off the post. Ripon also came up empty on only three
shots in the half.
The second half had a little more drama, but the same results,
as neither team could muster a goal. UW-Platteville tried their
hardest though. The Pioneers had one ball go off one post, then
bounce off the other for no goal. Ripon goalkeeper Dave Friesleben
also had a say in Platteville's scorelessness, as he made several
spectacular saves, diving in many different directions. Platteville's
best chance to score came with 13 seconds left when they received
a free kick from just outside the goalie box. They got three shots
off in the final ten seconds, but none of them made it in the net,
and the two teams headed to overtime tied at 0.
Friesleben finished the game with 14 saves, but in the 96th minute,
he couldn't stop the gamewinner. Platteville's Ben Terpening took
a pass from Alex Albright and put it past Friesleben for the 1-0
victory.
Ripon will try to notch their first victory of the season on Thursday
when they'll travel to UW-Whitewater. Gametime is set for 3:30
p.m.
