RIPON, Wis. - Going into Saturday's game against Grinnell, the
Red Hawks had lost five games by one goal. Sooner or later, they're
bound to get a break, but the Pioneers weren't there to help out,
as Grinnell defeated Ripon 3-2 on a goal in the final seconds.
Grinnell (7-2-2, 5-0) got on the board first on a Parker Koester
goal in the 34th minute. Thanks to great defense by both teams,
that turned out to be the only goal of the period, as the two teams
went into haltime with the game still up in the air.
Ripon (0-11, 0-5) quickly assured Grinnell that it wouldn't be
easy if they wanted to win. The Red Hawks' Chris Quillman took
a Price Ward pass in the 46th minute and put it in the back of
the net, tying the game at one. From there, the game went back
and forth, with Grinnell taking another lead in the 67th minute
on a Milan Popovic unassisted goal. That was answered twelve minutes
later on a Kris Hanson goal for the Red Hawks. The game though,
came down to the final minute, as Andrew Walsh connected on an
improbable goal with one second remaining dashing Ripon's hopes
of at least taking the game to overtime.
Ripon will look for thier first win of the season Sunday, as they'll
host Knox College in another Midwest Conference matchup. The game
will begin at approximately 1:30 p.m. and will be preceded by the
women's contest.
