ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Ripon College golf team dug themselves an early hole in this weekend's MWC Championships by shooting a first round score of 350, which put them in seventh place after one day of competition. The Red Hawk's team score improved each day in the three-day tournament, but they couldn't climb out of the seventh place spot, finishing one spot higher than they did last season.
Ripon's first round was highlighted by Raj Pelon's 81, including a 38 on the front nine. Billy Kollatz finished the round with an 87, while Bob Faulds and Rylee Berndt shot a 90 and 92, respectively. Ben Lukoski and Ryan Jahns each finished with a score of 100.
In the second day of the tournament, Ripon cut 13 strokes off their score, shooting a team score of 337, which kept them in seventh place. Pelon once again paced the Red Hawks with an 81, including another 38, this time on the back nine. Five of the six Ripon golfers either improved their score or shot the same score as the first round. Kollatz finished with a second-round 82, while Berndt shot an 84. Lukoski, Jahns, and Faulds rounded out the scores with a 90, 92, and 93, respectively.
Day three of the tourney brought even more improvement for the Red Hawks. They finished the final round with a 321, which was 16 strokes better than their previous round and 29 better than their initial round. Once again, five of the six Ripon golfers improved on their previous round. Berndt led the way with a 78, including a 38 on the front nine. Faulds also shot a 38 on the front, on his way to finishing the round with an 81. Pelon wasn't far behind, shooting an 80, while Kollatz finished with an 82. Jahns and Lukoski rounded out the scores with an 89 and 97, respectively.
The Red Hawks ended the tournament with a team score of 1008, which was just seven strokes behind sixth-place Lawrence University. Ripon finished 48 strokes ahead of eighth-place Illinois College. Monmouth College won the event with a score of 934, including a 306 in their final round.
