Red Hawks Handle Rockford With Ease

January 5, 2008

Box Score

RIPON, Wis. – Ripon was in control of Saturday’s game from the outset, scoring the first nine points of the game and coasting to an 82-47 win over Rockford College. The Red Hawks dominated nearly every statistical category, including outrebounding Rockford 49-36 and forcing them into 27 turnovers, which Ripon converted into 29 points.

Rockford (0-11) struggled to put the ball in the basket for much of the first half, making just four of their 28 field goal attempts (14.3%). That included a 1-for-10 performance from 3-point range. Ripon (4-5) meanwhile made 53 percent (17-32) of their shots from the field. Ripon held the Regents scoreless for the first four and a half minutes of the half, when Rockford scored five straight to cut Ripon’s lead to four points. That would be the closest the score would get the rest of the way, as the Red Hawks rattled off 12 straight points to open a 16-point advantage. After four consecutive Rockford points, Ripon went on another run to bust the game wide open, scoring 18 unanswered points to take a 30 point lead, while holding Rockford scoreless for eight minutes. Eric Wright gave Ripon their largest lead of the half on a jumper that gave them a 32-point lead with under a minute to play, and the Red Hawks would head to the locker room up by 28.

Rockford scored the first four points of the second half, as they looked to mount a comeback. That run was short-lived however, thanks to an 11-3 Ripon run to open another 32-point lead. Ripon would coast from there, leading by at least 26 points the rest of the way. The Red Hawk’s largest lead of the day came with under a minute to play, as Matt Nelson connected on a 3-pointer to give them a 38-point advantage. Rockford shot a little better (33 %) in the second half, but it wasn't nearly enough, as Ripon shot 57 percent (13-23) in the second period.

Everyone got into the action for the Red Hawks, as all 17 players played at least three minutes, with 16 of them scoring at least one point. Scott Gillespie led the team with 12 points, to go along with five rebounds, and a
team-high five assists. Paul Wise added 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while also grabbing seven boards. Tyler Fischer and Eric Wright each chipped in with seven points. Fischer added eight rebounds, while Wright produced two assists and two steals off the bench.

Rockford was led by Ed Thomas' 14 points, four assists, and four steals. DeWaun Wells added eight points off the bench, while Tyler Nauman and Jerric Stovall added six points apiece. Deandre Steward finished the game with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Ripon will go for their fourth win in a row on Wednesday, as they'll host UW-Eau Claire in their final game before resuming the conference season. Wednesday's game will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Storzer Center.
