Ripon Cuts Down Foresters

January 26, 2008

Box Score

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Less than 24 hours after leaving all their energy on the court at Grinnell, the Red Hawks showed that they still had some left in the tank, as they handled Lake Forest with ease Saturday, to the tune of a 75-68 victory. Ripon never trailed in the game and led by as many as 20 points. The Red Hawks were hot from the start, shooting 59 percent (19-32) in the first half, which helped them coast to their second conference win of the season.

All five Ripon starters all made at least one basket in the first six and a half minutes of the game, giving them an early 15-7 lead. That lead was extended to 12 points on back-to-back 3-pointers by Rich Cloeter, who came off the bench to score eight points in the game. Lake Forest (8-7, 4-4) managed to cut that lead in half with six and a half minutes left in the period on a basket by Jeremy Beyersdorf. Chris Kellett would open another double-digit lead for the Red Hawks (7-8, 2-6) a couple minutes later with a 3-pointer and lay-up on consecutive possessions. After the Foresters cut the lead back to nine, Ripon used a 9-5 run to end the half, taking a 13-point advantage to the locker room.

The Red Hawks were in control the rest of the game, building a 20-point lead with 14 minutes to play on a lay-up by Paul Wise. Lake Forest scored the next seven points after that to cut it to 13, but Ripon's lead would remain in double-digits until the Foresters cut it to nine with two and a half minutes left. They would make a late run, cutting it to six on a 3-pointer with 21 seconds remaining, but Ripon would hold on for the seven point win.

Scott Gillespie led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting, to go along with four rebounds and six assists. Kellett also continued his strong play this season, scoring 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 3-for-3 from

3-point range. Eric Wright added 15 points, six rebounds, and three steals, while shooting 7-for-10 from the field. Ripon finished the game shooting 53 percent (32-61) from the floor.

Lake Forest was led by Victor Campbell and Laird Walker, who scored 16 and 14 points, respectively. Beyersdorf added 12 points, while Hoyt Rees chipped in with nine points, 11 boards, and five assists.

The Red Hawks will hope to build on this win when they travel to Carroll College on Wednesday. That game will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be preceded by the women's contest against the Pioneers. Both games can be seen on www.midwestconference.tv.
