Red Hawks Fall To Red Hot Carroll College

January 30, 2008

Box Score

WAUKESHA, Wis. – It would have been nearly impossible for any team to be as smoking hot shooting the ball as Carroll College was Wednesday night. The Pioneers scorched the nets to the tune of 66 percent shooting (38-58) in the game, en route to a 99-61 win over the Red Hawks, who appeared to be outmatched from the beginning of the game. The Pioneers also hit 8 of 9 shots from 3-point range in the first half.

Ripon (7-9, 2-7) struck first, as Chris Kellett gave them their only lead of the game on their first possession, nailing a 3-pointer to take a 3-0 lead. That shot was quickly answered at the other end by a 3-pointer by Carroll's Wes Ladwig. Carroll (10-5, 6-3) then went on a 23-4 run in the next five and a half minutes to push their lead to 19. The Red Hawks would get as close as 16 the rest of the half, but Carroll would lead by as many as 26, and would take a 20-point advantage into intermission. Ripon shot a respectable 43 percent from the floor in the half, but that was cancelled out by Carroll's 69 percent shooting.

Things wouldn't get much better in the second half, as Carroll led by at least 30 points during the final 15 minutes of play. The Pioneers scored 26 points off 16 Ripon turnovers in the game, while Ripon managed just 11 points off 10 Carroll turnovers. Carroll also outrebounded the Red Hawks 34-26.

Kellett led the Red Hawks with 14 points, 12 of which came in the first half, while also grabbing a team-high six rebounds. Martin Esters was the only other Ripon player to score in double-figures, scoring 12 on 5-of-8 shooting. Scott Gillespie continued to distribute the ball well, dishing out seven assists.

Carroll's Wes Ladwig led all scorers with 29 on 12-of-13 shooting, including a 23-point performance in the first half. John Hoch added 17 points, while Jeremy Bohn and Eric Thompson each finished with 11. The Pioneers shot 62 percent (13-21) from 3-point range in the game.

The Red Hawks will attempt to put this game behind them, as they'll host Beloit College on Saturday in what will be Alumni Day. The Red Hawks will take on the Buccaneers at 4:00 p.m. and will be preceded by the women's contest with the Buccaneers. The men's alumni game will begin at approximately 11:30 a.m., with the women's alumni contest beginning at 10:00 a.m.
